چکیده

The detection of gamma rays of energy greater than 300 GeV from the BL Lacertae object Mrk 501 demonstrates that extragalactic TeV emission is not unique to Mrk 421. During 66 hr of observations between 1995 March and July we measured an average flux of 8.1H 1.4 3 10 cm s above 300 GeV, a flux that is only 20% of the average Mrk 421 flux. The new gamma-ray source has not been reported by the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory as an emitter of gamma rays at lower energies. There is evidence for variability on timescales of days. Subject headings: BL Lacertae objects: individual (Markarian 501)— gamma rays: observations

TeV gamma rays from the blazar Markarian 501 have been detected with the University of Durham Mark 6 atmospherič Cerenkov telescope using the imaging technique at large zenith angles. Observations were made at zenith angles in the range 70 • − 73 • during 1997 July and August when Markarian 501 was undergoing a prolonged and strong flare.

Gev Emission from Tev Blazars and Intergalactic Magnetic Fields

Several high-frequency peaked BL Lac objects such as Mrk 501 are strong TeV emitters. However, a significant fraction of the TeV gamma rays emitted are likely to be absorbed in interactions with the diffuse IR background, yielding electron-positron pairs. Hence, the observed TeV spectrum must be steeper than the intrinsic one. Using the recently derived intrinsic γ-ray spectrum of Mrk 501 durin...

Multiwavelength Observations of a Flare from Markarian 501

We present multiwavelength observations of the BL Lacertae object Markarian 501 (Mrk 501) in 1997 between April 8 and April 19. Evidence of correlated variability is seen in very high energy (VHE; E * 350 GeV) gray observations taken with the Whipple Observatory g-ray telescope, data from the Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment of the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, and quick-look res...

Study of the Flux and Spectral Variations in the VHE Emission from the Blazar Markarian 501, with the MAGIC Telescope

Abstract. The blazar Markarian 501 (Mrk 501) was observed above 100 GeV with the MAGIC Telescope during May, June and July 2005. The high sensitivity of the instrument made possible the detection of the source with high significance in each of the observing nights. During this observational campaign, the emitted gamma-ray flux from Mkn 501 was found to vary by one order of magnitude, and showed...

Very High Energy Gamma Rays from Markarian 501

During remarkable flaring activity in 1997 Markarian 501 was the brightest source in the sky at TeV energies, outshining the Crab Nebula by a factor of up to 10. Periods of flaring activity each lasting a few days were observed simultaneously by several gamma ray telescopes. Contemporaneous multiwavelength observations in April 1997 show that a substantial fraction of the total AGN power is at ...
